Report from our correspondent, reutilizing low-tenor fine particle ilmenite from tailings is regarded by insiders as a worldwide problem of mineral industry. Recently, good news from Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group was that the titanium concentration plant solved the problem with the “Jet Cyclone flotation” technology developed by Beijing Binlong Mining New Technology Development Co., Ltd. It was a break through after the technology successfully being applied to tailings processing of many metal mines in Gansu, Inner Mongolia and other provinces.
Titanium is a kind of rare metal with hard texture, light mass and high corrosion resistance. Titanium alloy is a good raw material of aircraft manufacturing. During the period of the seventh, the eighth and the ninth five-year plan, comprehensive utilization of titanium in Panzhihua was continuously put on a list of the national major projects of science and technology. After hard working of the researchers, many excellent technical results had been got, such as technological process optimization of titanium processing, GL spiral, packaged technology of reutilizing fine particle ilmenite, on line inspection system for titanium concentrate grade, and reutilization of gravity separation tailings. The titanium processing reutilization technology of Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group reached an international leading level and the titanium concentration plant came to be the biggest specialized enterprise for the production of titanium concentrate. Now the titanium concentrate production scale is 0.3 million tons per year which accounts for one third of the total domestic production.
The titanium concentration plant of Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group established the high-tech industrial demonstrative project in 2004 with the processing efficiency of 0.14 million tons a year which mainly reutilized the particle ilmenite (+0.038mm) in Panzhihua. The raw material was the tailings of magnetic separation in concentration plant and consisted of ilmenite, titanomagnetite, magnetite, titanaugite, plagioclase, pyrite, pyrrhotite, etal. For the complexity of the mineralogical characteristics and composition of materials, it was impossible for the titanium concentration plant of Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group to effectively reutilize the fine particle ilmenite with the present mineral processing technology along with the gradual mature technological process for production of fine particle titanium concentrate.

To avoid the resource waste, take full advantage of the titanium resource in Panzhihua, fully improve the resource utilization and change the resource superiority to economic superiority, Titanium Branch of Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group cooperated with Beijing Binlong Mining New Technology Development Co., Ltd in April, 2005 to reutilize the low-tenor fine particle ilmenite lost in operation with the Jet cyclone floatation machine. Binlong Mining New Technology Development Co., Ltd had independent intellectual property right of the technology which was at the world leading level. The successful feasibility test for 14 days showed that when feed grade was 7.31%, a concentrate grade of 47.56% was obtained and the tailings grade was 5.46% with the production rate 4.39% and recovery rate 28.59% respectively.
Based on the earlier test results, Titanium Branch of Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group invited Comprehensive Utilization Institute of Mineral Resources, MGMR to involve in the test about mineral identification and analysis of the test products. After 72 hours’ industrial test of concentrate floatation by Jet Cyclone Floatation machine from Sep 7th to 11th in 2005, the averaged production index showed: when the feed grade was 6.55%, a concentrate grade of 47.75% was obtained and the tailings grade was 4.83% with the production rate 4.01% and recovery rate 29.21% respectively.
The authority experts approved that the Jet Cyclone Floatation machine had high recovery rate of ilmenite, enrichment ratio and separation speed. At the condition of lean, mixed and distribution wide mineral composition, TiO2 grade in floatation tailings could be improved from 6.5% to above 47% only by adopting the technological process of one roughing, one scavenging and three concentratings. The technology solved the current difficulty in titanium processing of effectively reutilizing the low-tenor floatation tailings and fully improved the resource utilization.
